Trauma Doesn’t Always Look Like a ‘Big” Event

When people hear the word trauma, they often picture something dramatic; a single, unmistakable event. But trauma isn't always one moment. Sometimes it's years of having to be the reliable one, the calm one, the one who managed everyone else's emotions before you ever learned to manage your own.

If you find yourself over-functioning in relationships, bracing for problems that haven't happened yet, or feeling like you have to earn rest, that pattern usually has a history. I help high-achieving adults understand where these patterns started and build a different way of moving through the world; one that doesn't require constant vigilance to feel safe.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is what happens when an experience, or a repeated pattern of experiences, overwhelms your ability to cope in the moment, and your nervous system doesn't fully process it as "over." That can come from a single significant event, but it can just as easily come from chronic conditions: growing up in an unpredictable household, being the emotional caretaker in your family, experiencing neglect, or living for years under conditions that required constant alertness.

The result isn't always flashbacks or nightmares. For a lot of high-functioning adults, trauma shows up as hypervigilance, difficulty trusting, chronic anxiety, or a nervous system that's stuck in "on" even when there's nothing currently wrong.

Signs Trauma Might Be Affecting You

  • Feeling on edge or overly alert, even in safe situations

  • Difficulty trusting people, even when they've given you no reason not to

  • A strong drive to control outcomes or over-prepare for the worst

  • Discomfort with rest, stillness, or receiving care from others

  • Strong emotional reactions that feel bigger than the situation calls for

  • A pattern of over-functioning in relationships to feel needed or safe

  • Feeling disconnected from your own body or emotions

  • Avoiding certain memories, feelings, or conversations without fully knowing why

Trauma doesn't require a dramatic story to be valid.

If your nervous system learned to stay on guard, it doesn't matter how "normal" your history looks from the outside.

Trauma Takes Many Forms

The chronic, "no single big event" pattern of trauma is common among the adults I work with, but it's not the only form trauma takes. I treat the full range, including:

  • Acute trauma - the impact of a single distressing event

  • Complex or developmental trauma - the cumulative effect of repeated or prolonged difficult experiences, often starting in childhood

  • Relational trauma - wounds that developed within close relationships, including family, caregivers, or partners

  • PTSD symptoms - flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, or avoidance following a traumatic experience

Whatever form your trauma takes, treatment starts with understanding your specific history, not fitting you into a single narrative.

How I Treat Trauma

Trauma-informed care - every part of our work together is grounded in understanding how past experiences shape present-day reactions, without re-traumatizing you in the process.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - helping you identify and shift the thought patterns and self-protective habits trauma leaves behind.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy - building practical tools for the here and now, so healing isn't only about understanding the past but also about functioning differently in your present life.

What to Expect From Trauma Therapy

Trauma work moves at your pace. We won't dig into painful history before you're ready, and you're always in control of how much detail you share. Early sessions focus on building safety and understanding your specific patterns — what triggers you, how your body responds, and what's been getting in the way of feeling settled.

From there, we work on both processing what happened and building new patterns going forward, so the past has less control over your present. Many clients notice their reactions becoming less intense and more manageable well before the underlying story feels fully "resolved"; healing tends to happen in layers, not all at once.

Sessions are available in person at my Jupiter office or via telehealth.
